Basically, a hair grows, then stops growing, then falls out. The growth phase, or anagen, of a human head hair can last two to six years, which is why our head hairs can get so long. After anagen, a hair goes into catagen, a very short phase lasting just a couple days, in which the follicle shrinks a little bit. That’s followed by telogen, when the hair pretty much just sits there, doing nothing. Then, at last, exogen, when it falls out. This process is always happening, and it’s totally normal for a person to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day this way. That’s just hair going through its cycles, and there will be a new one to replace it.That’ll plug your drain up, but compared to the 90,000 to 150,000 total hairs on the average person’s head, it’s pennies.

For those who don’t plan on counting their hair every day, there are ways to know when hair is thinning or being lost at a higher rate.When waking up in the morning, there may be an usually large amount on your pillow. When you comb your hair (especially without tugging, which can pull the hair out), more than normal will be left in the comb. Others include autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Other reasons for hair loss include extreme stress; physical trauma like surgery or intense illness; dramatic weight loss over a short period of time; and taking too much Vitamin A.

Hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications. Excessive hair loss can be worrying and scary. The good news is, there’s often a way to fix it. Just as there are many causes, there are many treatments for hair loss. Dermatologists recommend treating hair loss early. Early means before you lose a lot of hair. Hair loss is harder to treat when a person has a lot of hair loss.
